Durgapur Chitralaya Rath Yatra Mela canceled

Durgapur: This year the famous Rath Yatra Mela of Durgapur, the Chitralaya Rath Yatra Mela has been canceled for the first time in 37 years.

Most of us might already had this news coming as most large gatherings are getting canceled all across India and the world, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Durgapur Rath Yatra Mela is held every year in a grand manner in the Rajiv Gandhi Mela Maidan. It will be canceled this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

This decision has been taken by the ‘Rath Jatra Utsav Samaj Kalyan Samiti’ for the safety of the people of Durgapur.

According to the news sources, common people will be unable to pull the rope of the holy chariot this year as ‘Jagannath dev’ will visit her aunt’s house or “Masir Bari” in the temple premise 100 m away.

All the rituals will be done within the temple premises. Any form of large gathering will not be allowed.

People however will be able to visit and have a Dorshon of Jaganath Dev by maintaining strict social distance. Prasad will also be given.

The “Snan Jatra” will also be done maintaining strict social distancing rules.

The occasion of rath yatra will start with “Snan Jatra” that will take place on 5th June in the Jagannath temple located in Rajendra Prasad Road.

People will be able to pour water maintaining social distance. Only 12 people inside the Jagannath temple at a time. Masks are mandatory.

The Rath Yatra Occasion will take place on 23rd June inside the temple premises.

This Mela is organized in Durgapur for 37 years and is the ray of hope for so many people from various parts of West Bengal and from outside the state too. For various businesses, traders and workers this Mela acts as a major source of income once a year, even for the autos, Toto drivers, and mini-buses.

The common people are quite disappointed about this news as every year people of all age groups wait and are literally excited to visit the fair.
